You’ve no doubt noticed the bloom of campaign signs at intersections and on lawns. As candidates, this is a weird year for campaigning (ok, and for just about everything else...) since we can’t go canvassing and there are so few public gatherings. Which means our signs are our most visible outreach. Candidates from all parties have had their signs tampered with, and by the bipartisan nature of the tampering, it is likely more mischief than a political rival.
This is a stressful time for all of us. The ongoing battle between exhaustion and insomnia, anxiety and boredom, isolation and endless togetherness has many of us ready for a primal scream. Between the virus and the unrest and the election, there are lots of ‘sides’ to be chosen. Seeing your signs trashed sucks the enthusiasm out of the urge to serve, and leaves you wondering who was behind the ugliness. Talk to your teens about letting the signs be. Whoever you support, have enough faith in them that they can win without you sabotaging their opponent. For all the uncertainty of everything else, the election will be over in a few short weeks, decisions will be made and we’ll congratulate the winners, thank our supporters and collect our signs. Until then, be kind. And VOTE!
